Students in homeroom got their computers, turned them on, and returned them to the carts today.

I was able to set up a lesson for an introduction to our 6th grade systems and it went well.

My colleagues in the Math department complimented me on my skills and help with organizing data.

I was able to fit in a little bit of a Visual Pattern today. Here's what we got in 4 minutes.

The computer carts were delivered and I couldn't use one of the plugs until Gabe came in an fixed it with his BARE HANDS! I was impressed.
The staff at RdV is wonderful. I love that colleagues listen, help, laugh, and learn with me. Thanks everyone!

Knight Solvers worked on puzzles to help build teamwork.

Mr. Webster visited during Period 4 and talked about school rules and CHAMPS. The students were very polite.

In Period 7 Science, students learned to play Werewolves in the Night in order to apply the Claim, Support, Question Routine in some of our upcoming science activities. This is a fun way to learn how to make claims, support them or question them to determine the validity of the claims.
These are some of the claims so far:
The werewolf will win if it waits for an opening to go down.
If the werewolf gets stuck at the top, the hunters can win.
The hunters can win.
The werewolf can win because he can move anywhere.
The person who goes first loses.
Hunters need to make a triangle to limit the werewolf's movement.
If you get the werewolf in the middle circle of the second row above the forest, he can win.

Day 5 of 180 has zoomed past! Most of my classes have their Google Classroom names chosen. Students are lining up nicely and remembering their agendas. I forgot to collect forms in Homeroom and the students remembered and gave them to me. Things are falling into place.

Each period has its own name for Google Classroom. My students came up with some creative names for their class name.

  • Clean Math
  • Mighty Math Knights
  • Math Mavericks
  • Infinity Math
  • Numeral Knights
  • Scientific Science
  • Sid the Science Kids
  • The Scientific Knights
Creative Problem Solvers were very interested in some of the projects from last year and are looking forward to doing them this year. Here are some of their name ideas:

Smart Donuts
CPS Fun kidz
Knight Solvers
Cool People Squad
Cheese Puff Squad
Canned Potato Sauce
Cool Powerful Solvers
Cool Potato People
We've started doing Four 4s and are discussing how incorrectly applying order of operations can change an answer. All of these answers have not been checked. We are building a team that isn't afraid of making mistakes to learn.

The students wrote for 10 minutes to complete the Compass Points Activity. I altered it a little bit. This is a great way for me to know what my student's feelings are about being in middle school.
I am excited about...
I am worried about...
I need ....
I will be successful if...

John Stevens has a great resource that I just discovered, called Table Talk Math. I used this one in class today and students seemed to enjoy it and I discovered some ways students observe things in class.

Mr. Guzman and I successfully used our new Webcams to communicate between classes today. It was exciting to have such an interesting new tool!

Today one of my students brought in a hand made poster for our math polls.

Students are starting to use their agendas already!

I've already learned a few names!

Another first day zips by at top speed! The students all lined up nicely when requested.

This is DEFINITELY a positive!

As usual, I love the Which One Doesn't Belong insights of my students. Always a positive.

Monday, 21 August 2017 (Eclipse Day)

Welcome to a new school year! I completely forgot about my positive postings last week during our district and school site meeting days. Thursday's District meeting day was great. I had a chance to see friends from other school sites, eat good food, and collaborate on an activity. Our group, the Flycatchers, won 2nd Place!

On Friday, Rio del Valle teachers met and took care of several beginning of the year tasks. I was able to complete several online assignments, find out about a research possibility, and go out to lunch for an hour with most of the 6th grade math/science team!

Today, Bob and Steve helped me put up pennants, sheets, paper, and borders.

They also helped organize the tables and chairs.

We took a break to experience the 60% eclipse around 10AM.

LG, the art teacher contributed a brain to the classroom.

I'm excited to meet my new students tomorrow!
