Friday, December 21, 2018 positives

It was a minimum day so students were released at 1:10.

Several colleagues & students gave me holiday gifts!

The students cleaned up the room very nicely at the end of the day after playing games such as Seattleopoly, Mancala, Uno, and Exploding Kittens!

Thursday, 21 December 2018

Before school began, a student gave me a box of Godiva chocolates and a lovely card.

There is a birthday tradition developing in class. The birthday child brings goodies for their classmates!
Santa visited and will try to grant me perfect students for Christmas!
Several students are performing this evening. They were proudly enjoying their Hip Hop Mindset togs.

The 6th-grade team had 3 hours of planning thanks to Dr. Puglisi and his team. Some band members from Rio Mesa, UCSB, and UW introduced students to band. One was a previous RdV student who was thrilled to see me!

The students organized a Secret Santa exchange and although there was one problem, it was dealt with respectfully. Students really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the response to today's Read Aloud (Restart by Gordon Korman). Students hypothesized something about a character using some inference in the story. They were able to cite evidence from earlier in the novel to back up their guess. I was impressed.

The students completed STEP 2 of their Snow/Caring Globes today. Tomorrow they add the caring messages. My students were very organized as they added glitter and glycerine. Thanks to Dr. Cordova for setting this up!

Hotel Snap had students VERY engaged. Hands-on integrated way to learn about surface area related to volume. Every team had 50 cubic units from which to make their hotel. We might be able to finish tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I met with friends to celebrate Camille's birthday and enjoyed hearing about the 5th-grade field trip to Camarillo Airport and reconnecting with people I haven't seen in awhile.

Monday, 17 December 2018

Before school started, my teammate presented me with a gift!

At the end of the day, one of my students, RC, presented me with a very nice photo of a Tropicbird!

The students made a video thank you and cards to present to the Kindergarteners who performed for them last Friday. They were adorable!

Dr. Cordova visited and guided the students through the first steps of making a Kindness Globe. (A So. Cal version of a snow globe, since we don't get snow.)

Friday, 14 December 2018

As soon as we arrived, we took a photo of all the buddies.

The students did a great job making snowflakes as part of the Why is Snow White activity from Mystery Science.

The 6th graders enjoyed figuring out the YALP Memo (pronounced MEE- MOH) on the playground. It was interesting to watch them struggling to play with it effectively.

Several of the Kindergarten classes invited us to a performance of The Gingerbread Man. Naturally, I teared up -- I didn't cry! They were adorable.

Field Trip Friday yielded me over 10,000 steps before leaving work!

Six students share something each day at the end of morning meeting. Often, students share a joke or riddle and they just make me laugh! Examples: What is a duck's favorite snack? Quackers. What did the duck say after buying lipstick? Put it on my bill.

Students used linking cubes to experience volume. They worked together well after I redirected them.

Today was the first meeting of the Leadership Team. I made it to the meeting on time.

Wednesday, 12 December 2018

This morning Mrs. Franckowiak's 2nd graders and my 6th graders worked together. The 6th graders were the learning guides with a Mystery Science activity about Why Snow is White. They really enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to doing this with their del Sol buddies on Friday.

We started the MSPP program at Rio del Sol/del Mar. I was the leader for training the peer leaders. Now the students will be in charge.

I enjoyed the reading/thinking activity at our staff meeting.

Tuesday, 11 December 2018

My students made a birthday greeting for my father who may be 84 years old today and a 2nd one we can use on any student's birthday.

The students enjoyed the stand and defend activity regarding types of measurements for the perimeter of a parking lot, area of a state, volume of a swimming pool.
There were some interesting discussions regarding types of measurement. There seems to be some confusion still about perimeter and area and we are introducing volume!

The room was organized quickly and nicely at the end of the day. Computer Science students even had time to try and find some SETS. They only found a few before time was up.

Cruz solved my air pressure door problem. I left my towel at home to wash and couldn't stand the air pressure noise. He set the rug under the door, and voila, no more noise!

More students began Silent Reading by being silent and reading without any input from me.

We had a PD about ST Math that was very informative. It was only one hour at the end of the school day. A sub was provided. I learned how to use it more effectively.

Friday, 7 December 2018

Students were asked to use the GRAPES acronym to describe themselves. They could make any type of presentation in order to share the information. First thing this morning a student presented me with this poster!

The morning greeting was Boker Tov (Hebrew) and the activity was playing Dreidel. It was a popular activity.

It was like Old Home Day today. Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Wilson were guest teaching and we all used to teach at Rio del Norte together.

Hip Hop Mindset is always a hit with students.

Wednesday, 5 December 2018

I needed to collect all of my student's writing notebooks so that I can check up on them. I need them in order and came up with the idea of them putting the notebooks in place of their computers when they checked them out this morning. Now I have all of them in order!

Today students worked to explain how they used a net of a polygon to determine the area. They were given a photo and had to sketch a net from the original,

We were going to have all of the 6th graders perform their dances on the outdoor stage today. So we came up with an alternative due to the rain. We set up each classroom on video in a google hangout and shared the performances that way!

Tuesday, 4 December 2018

This is the Week of Code designed to introduce computer programming to students. Everyone really seemed to enjoy their time coding. They had a variety of programs from which to choose.

Students are still working to understand nets and surface area. I gave a challenge to find different nets for a cube and several students came up with more than one way.

GRAPES as an acronym for studying cultures was introduced yesterday and over half the students passed a quiz on the parts today. They also really enjoyed beginning the GRAPES of ME activity.
