Both Royal Solvers and Computer Return classes found all 6 SETS in under 3 minutes.

Every student was reading silently during SSR.

Students followed directions during a guided discussion with their partners, took notes, and learned a new strategy for understanding information.

Thursday, 26 October 2017

My day started with a very positive meeting with my principal. Thanks Dr. Peralta!

It wasn't as hot today (81degrees) as it has been PLUS we were able to conduct classes in the air-conditioned library.

The Royal Solvers did it again! They found some amazing connections on the pattern we studied a few days ago.

Unfortunately, the day started with an 80 degree classroom. Fortunately, the librarian let us have Silent Reading in the air-conditioned library. Mrs. Barnes gave us a chance to enjoy AC later in the day as well.

Students worked on topic sentences for a Claim Evidence Reasoning activity. There were several good sentences.

Scores on the absolute value Quizizz were up today.

I took a couple AR tests since the students have a responsibility to earn 10 points each month. Now I've got 24 AR points!

Mrs. Guzik and I are collaborating on Ceramics so that the Royal Solvers can work with clay.
We had a paint mishap when a student shook the paint and the lid wasn't on firmly. Several students came to the rescue and did an EXCELLENT job cleaning up the mess.  It was a BIG mess! This video is before the mess.

The outside temperature got over 100 degrees outside my classroom. It was 85 in the room. Period 7 students were able to work in a classroom with AC. Thanks Mrs. Barnes!

Monday, 23 October 2017

My classroom was way cooler than it was outside! I was dripping with sweat, but for some reason, the room was around 82 degrees while it was 99 degrees outside. I kept the doors closed all day.

Students worked hard in math! Number sense, math quiz via Quizizz, and a Cicada problem with prime numbers. Bell to bell in the warm room. They were rock stars!!!

Students from homeroom finally have the system figured out for checking out chargers. It's working really well.

Friday, 20 October 2017

Royal Solvers came up with some excellent questions about water for their upcoming water project.
Anton got the part as the scarecrow in the upcoming Wizard of Oz production!

Two of my classes found all 6 SETs today. CPS found them in under a minute and I thought their cheers would blow off the roof! Computer return students solved them in under 3 minutes and were also very thrilled.

Students followed directions well in math as I guided them in a ratio lesson.

Students continued working on the Ferris Wheel Problems. Unfortunately it is taking a long time. Fortunately group discussions are productive and students are working toward understanding the problem and solution.

Students wore red to help support Red Ribbon Week. It's exciting to see the students feel part of something bigger than themselves.

Royal Solvers found all 6 sets in under 2 minutes 10 seconds. They get so excited when they find them all.

There were some effective discussions in math classes today. I asked one group to videotape their solution so everyone could learn from it.

During the Science Presentations, there were several mistakes, but students were comfortable changing the mistakes so future presentations will be better. Growth mindset was apparent. I'm really trying not to dwell on the fact that

Tuesday, 17 October 2017

I'm enrolled in an online course exploring the role of play in mathematics. You can see a video here. Royal Solvers and Math students were given 4 minutes to create using an online pattern block site.

  https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/web-apps/pattern-shapes/
Students then took a screenshot and uploaded their results in Google Classroom. I also videotaped so you can see how intently the students were during the activity.

Students observed this chart and asked the following questions. I noticed that they are starting to use more academic vocabulary.

The STEAM Academy Teachers put together a paper engineered card for Dr. Puglisi and he really enjoyed it.

The Sculpin Group (of which I was a member) got 2nd place in Identifying student levels from oral reading samples.

We had a great lunch and I was able to get a 15 minute walk in while the line went down.

Friday, 13 October 2017

My CPS students came up with some amazing questions regarding the visual from Dan Finkel.

Students worked on cleaning up their bookmark bars so they can quickly find sites we use regularly.

I think I figured out a better way to store the computers.

Thursday, 12 October 2017

Students used manipulatives to model a Visual Pattern before writing an explanation.

One of my students shared a clay monster that he has been making at home.

Science Students began their presentations about scientists.

Wednesday, 11 October 2017

I spent the day with some amazing colleagues sharing ideas for best practices to empower our math students.
I really enjoyed the video at the beginning of the day.

The format of the day was excellent. Leslie Pimentel did an excellent job sharing pertinent, helpful information and effective planning time.

Tuesday, 10 October 2017

Unfortunately, I have a cold. Fortunately, a huge number of students were out on field trips for other classes today!

We participated in Global Math Week. The students in attendance made some interesting connections by looking at patterns of the results.

Birthday dress! I loved this!

Friday, 6 October 2017

Unfortunately, several subs were needed but not here. Fortunately, I was able to help out and the class was great!

It was a very warm day, but students worked. Almost all students have me logged in as a coach on Khan Academy.

In Science, one of my students found online access to Micrographia by Robert Hooke. They are researching Cell Theory and scientists who had a role in cell knowledge.

Fortunately, my new printer arrived.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it online by myself.

Fortunately, I helped a colleague solve a tech issue which made me feel good.

Students learned how to use the camera on their Chromebook to take photos of projects and upload them.

Royal Solvers used math and engineering skills to put up the Cardboard Techniques display they made.

All of the students in attendance today are signed up to use Math XL for Schools with their CMP3 materials!

Period 5 Science students finished their Virus and Bacteria T-charts. They worked well together.

CPS students found all 6 SETs in under 3 minutes. They are so funny! They want to find them with better time every time!

Most of the 4th period students registered for the online part of CMP3.

I met with a few of the STEAM Team members in an online meeting with teachers and TOSAs in Arizona.

Monday, 2 October 2017

CPS students are working together to solve all sorts of problems. One is how to hang the Cardboard Technique board they made.

Students tried their first desmos activity today with Quadrilaterals. I wanted to get them thinking about how to communicate using mathematically correct terms. I noticed that they really understood the directions.

In Science we had to review last week's activity due to confusion, but students were polite and worked well with each other.
